The New York City Council is the law-making body of the City of New York, comprised of 51 members from 51 different Council Districts throughout the five boroughs. The Council monitors the operation and performance of city agencies, makes land use decisions and has sole responsibility for approving the city's budget.
Councilman James F. Gennaro, representative for the 24th Council District located in Queens and Chairman of the Council's Committee on Environmental Protection, has led a series of hearings addressing the health of the bay and its future. This effort has resulted in the passing of legislation, Local Law 71, which establishes a Jamaica Bay Watershed Action Plan Advisory Committee to work jointly with NYC DEP to generate a report containing recommendations to restore and maintain Jamaica Bay's water quality and ecological integrity.
