Jamaica Bay Sunset Cruise |

Don Riepe, the Jamaica Bay Guardian, and Mickey Cohen will conduct a special 3-hour narrated tour of the backwater marshes of Jamaica Bay aboard the "Golden Sunshine", where you'll learn about the history, ecology & wildlife of this 13,000 acre preserve. The trip features nesting peregrine falcon, osprey, terns, oystercatchers as well as egrets, herons and migrating shorebirds. The $45 cost includes wine & cheese, fruit, and other snacks. The Golden Sunshine will depart from Pier 2.

New York State Beach Cleanup |

As part of the 22nd Annual International Coastal Cleanup, the American Littoral Society (ALS) along with several organizations and volunteers will be cleaning the beaches of New York State, including Long Island Sound, Hudson River, Atlantic Ocean, Great Lakes, Finger Lakes, and creeks and bays. There are several sites throughout the Refuge where volunteers are welcome to participate (http://www.alsnyc.org/nycsites.htm) . It is recommended to bring work gloves, sun hat, and sunscreen. Registration is free.
Coordinated by the ALS in 2007, more than 9,000 volunteers documented and removed over 142,000 pounds of debris at 285 sites across New York State. There were 3 underwater cleanups.

Exploring the Trails of Dead Horse Bay |

Well-known naturalist Mickey Maxwell Cohen, author of "Exploring the Trails of Dead Horse Bay", leads a hike through the trails and along the beach at New York's best kept natural secret -- Dead Horse Bay -- along the edge of Jamaica Bay where you'll discover little known woodlands, coastal thickets, and a treasure-laden beach. It is recommended to bring drinking water, sun and insect protection, and binoculars. All interested parties should meet at 1:00pm at the Ranger Station.

The 3rd Annual Shorebird Festival at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge features a full day of activity including history, ecology, management and identification of the many species of shorebirds migrating through the NYC coastal area. The festival is led Kevin Karlson, co-author of "The Shorebird Guide", Don Riepe, former Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge manager, and Lloyd Spitalnik, shorebird photographer.

Mickey Maxwell Cohen, marine biologist and co-author of "Adventures at the Beach" leads a hike along the ocean beach to learn about shorebirds, fishes, crabs, seashells, and seaweeds. He'll also review World War II history on the remains of the giant fortifications designed to protect NY Harbor from enemy attack. Binoculars and a hand lens will be helpful. Train/Bus: take the 2/5 train to Flatbush Avenue then connect to Q35 MTA bus in front of Lord's Bakery. Ask the driver to let you off in front of the Ryan Center because it is no longer an official stop, or you can get off at the last stop before the toll and walk back towards the center.
Car: take the Belt Parkway to exit 11 south. Continue on Flatbush Avenue until the last traffic light before the Marine Parkway Gil Hodges Bridge, left onto Floyd Bennett Blvd, the main entrance to the park. Make the first left (Aviation Road), the Visitors Center will be on your left.

Rockaway Canoe Day |
|
|
The Rockaway Waterfront Alliance and New York City Department of Parks & Recreation are sponsoring a canoe day along the Rockaway shoreline on Saturday June 28th. Urban Park Rangers will give canoe/paddling instruction and lead participants through the Norton Basin area of Jamaica Bay. This is a great opportunity for beginner and experienced paddlers alike to come explore the Rockaways and the natural shoreline habitat of Jamaica Bay with experienced guides. Registration is required as space is limited.
Later in the afternoon, the Sebago Canoe Club will lead a tour of Jamaica Bay beginning at 3:30. This expedition is for experienced paddlers and kayakers beginning at Bayswater Park, exploring Sommerville Basin and Dubois Point Wildlife Sanctuary. Registration is required as space is limited. Kayak and canoe owners are encouraged to bring their own boats.

"Rockapulco" Historical Bike Tour |

The Rockaway Waterfront Alliance is hosting a 14-mile bike ride, starting at Jacob Riis Park and traveling the entire length of the seven mile Rockaway Beach boardwalk and back along Jamaica Bay on Sunday May 18th (rain or shine). The tour will be led by a Rockaway historian and will include stops along the way to discuss historical landmarks and view pictures of these areas in their heyday. Bikers will have a chance to see this spectacular NYC waterfront, Jacob Riis Park, and Fort Tilden on the way to Breezy Point. Travel will be at an easy pace and will stop at the halfway point. Please bring your own bagged lunch and refreshments. Registration is required as space is limited.

The Rockaway Waterfront Alliance & the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation are hosting a day of fun off Rockaway beach boardwalk with free activities and programs for families and kids of all ages on Saturday May 3rd (raindate May 4th). This years event will include a dinosaur dig, kite making, mock dolphin rescue, Green Circus Performers, beach volleyball, Robotic Lego demonstrations, firehouse safety obstacle course, water testing, plantings, composting, solar race cars, Museum of Natural History “mobile museum”, face painting, bounce house, and booths for kids to learn about conservation & science, along with creating their own environmental arts & crafts.
If you ride your bike to the event, you can take part in the bike maintenance workshops and free Department of Transportation helmet giveaways.
