International Beach Cleanup Day - Norton Basin

The Norton Basin Stewardship Group of Edgemere (NBESG), Rockaway Waterfront Alliance (RWA) and the American Littoral Society (ALS) are sponsoring a cleanup at Norton Basin, Jamaica Bay as part of 2009 Annual International Beach Cleanup Day. Participants will gather along the edge of Norton Basin and clean the shore of washed up garbage and litter. It is recommended to bring sun hat, sun screen, water and some lunch. We will supply gloves, bags, pencils, etc. Children are particularly welcome. On this annual cleanup day, we will document all that is picked up. The data gathered will be registered in an International Database. In 2008, 9,917 volunteers, coordinated by the ALS, cleaned and documented 168,856 pounds of debris along 387 miles of New York State's shoreline. The rain date is Sunday September 20, 2009, 11:00am - 2:00pm Directions: By Train: 2 blocks from the A train By Bus: Q22 Bus, get off at Beach 35th Street and Beach Channel Drive, walk north towards Norton Basin.

You will venture out into Norton Basin to cleanup the shore as well as partake in seining to learn about the wildlife habitat of the bay and to monitor the efforts of RWA’s Oyster Restoration Project.

The trip features nesting peregrine falcon, osprey, egrets, shorebirds and waterfowl. The $45 cost includes wine & cheese, fruit, and other snacks. The Golden Sunshine will depart from Pier 2.

Dubos Wildlife Sanctuary Beach Clean-Up

Earth Day Restoration Project: Plumb Beach

On Saturday April 18th, several organizations will participate in marsh/beach/dune cleanup and planting at Plumb Beach, Jamaica Bay. Volunteers are needed to help remove floatable debris and plant native coastal plants (beach plum, red cedar, pitch pine, American beachgrass). The event will begin by meeting @ 10am in the parking lot just off the eastbound lane of the Belt Parkway between Knapp St. (exit 9) and Flatbush Avenue (exit 11). It is recommended to bring a lunch, as well as old clothes & shoes, etc. Water, bags, gloves, tools, plants and free investment advice will be provided. This project is funded in part by grants from the NOAA-RAE Partnership and the National Fish & Wildlife Foundation. The cleanup at Plumb Beach on Sunday was very well attended as volunteers collected well over 1500 water bottles in addition to litter that persists there.

"Landscapes of the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge", an exhibition of photography by Rosalie Frost, will open at the visitor center of the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge beginning Saturday April 4 and run through Sunday, June 28, 2009. Rosalie Frost has been involved with photography for the last thirty years. During this time nature photography has been intertwined with other subjects. Recently, she has begun to focus in on nature and the refuge, and has offered plenty of material.

The Winter Woods in the North Forty Natural Area
